GREG BARBER COMPANY SPECIALIZES IN ENVIRONMENTAL PRINTING

My name is Greg Barber and I specialize in environmental printing. That means recycled paper, tree free paper, and chlorine free paper, printed with soy ink or 100% non toxic toner.

I own my own company, Greg Barber Company, and I represent ten environmental companies, from around the country, that I feel match my environmental mission.

One of the companies that fits my goals is Sandy Alexander, along with their digital division, eSA Solutions.

Both companies are FSC and ISO certified. There are not many printers that can state that they have both certifications.

Last year Sandy Alexander, Inc. consummated one of the largest purchases of Wind Energy on the East Coast, and they continue to use wind Energy as their prime source of energy. Wind Energy is a renewable source of Energy and is oil free.

I also represent Graphic Paper: At Graphic Paper, we specialize in 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper that is 100% processed chlorine free.

Graphic Paper features text and cover papers in 50-100# text and matching cover weights in flat sheets and web rolls. We carry white and 4 colors in our 100% PCW lines. These papers are certified by The Chlorine Free Products Association to be 100% recycled (all post-consumer), 100% process chlorine free, and are FSC certified. We also carry FSC certified, coated papers for both digital and offset presses.

REMEMBER, when choosing recycled papers for your next job, "only" the post-consumer waste content can make a sheet 100% recycled.

A grade that is 100% recycled and 50% post-consumer, is only 50% recycled. This is the standard for being recycled, used by the USEPA, since 1998.

In the example above, the 100% recycled sheet, with 50% post-consumer waste content, is now just a 50% recycled sheet, as only 50% of the paper used is post-consumer waste. The balance is considered pre-consumer, and that extra 50% is not counted anymore. Pre-consumer waste is paper that has never been printed on, and rarely went to our over crowded landfills. Most of the pre-consumer waste used today is paper that never even left the mills.

I also see mills list a lot of their paper grades as 100% recycled, with 30% post-consumer waste. Again, these papers are not 100% recycled. They are simply 30% recycled papers. Their terminology was correct when I started in 1990, but not correct after 1998.

We are asked that question a lot. Many young designers are afraid to switch their clients to environmental printing in fear of losing their clients to price.

You are not sacrificing quality to be more environmental, and you are not paying more to be environmental.

I will give you one example of saving a client money, and being environmental at the same time.

We quoted a client on printing 50M brochures that needed 5000 pounds of paper. The estimate called for a 96 brightness, 100% PCW 80# text and a matching 100# cover.

I asked the client if I could also quote on our 90 brightness, 100% PCW line. The answer was yes.

Our savings on the paper alone was over $7000.00. There is a difference in the brightness levels, but with any amount of ink coverage, that difference in brightness is not noticeable.

If the coverage is light, you still need to put the two grades we quoted, next to each other to see the difference.

The $7000.00 saving is a big number. The client chose to use our less expensive 100% post-consumer waste line, that is also 100% processed chlorine free.

I can personally tell you, this paper is comparable in price to most of the non recycled lines out there. We printed all the appropriate emblems, making our client look really good to their client.

The FSC emblem needs 1-2 days additional timing, as Smart Wood needs to check that we are an FSC plant, that the paper is FSC certified, and then my TBC plant can place the emblem where you want it. There are specific rules in the size and placement of their emblem that we must follow.

NATURAL COLORS IN 100% POST-CONSUMER OR TREE FREE

Our natural color papers in 100% PCW include Environment PC 100 natural, Beckett Concept, Astrolite PC 100, Evergreen, Protera, Options PC 100, and Genesis.

We have several tree Free Lines in Natural. One is Bamboo Tree Free. We stock this line in 80# text and 80# cover for our brochure work, as well as for business cards and postcards.

This line does not have specs in it. We usually print a tag line stating, printed on tree free Bamboo, with either soy ink or 100% non toxic toner, depending on which process my clients use.

We stock Sugar Cane in two shades of natural colors, in 80# cover, and this line has specs in it, making it look recycled.

BUSINESS CARDS: EXOTIC TREE FREE COLORS.

My Costa Rica Tree Free line is more Exotic. The paper is the color of the fruits they come from. Mango is orange, Lemon is yellow, Banana is a cream color, and Coffee is wild. It looks like 4 different brown colors on the front, and the back side is like a tint of the front. A lot going on, but really cool looking.

We usually print the Exotic Color business cards in 1 color or 4 color process.

We are pretty good at taking 2 PMS colors and printing them in CMYK to achieve the look you want. The paper is expensive, and we don't need much make ready, for digital printing, to get the jobs printed.

At almost $5.00 per pound, our cost, for the paper, we see mostly small orders, like business cards and postcards for these exotic colors.

This book has a medieval setting with Knights and Dragons having a debate on the merits of being environmental, ie: does it really matter if one person liters? Our Presses

The company I own or the companies I represent have presses from a small black & white digital press, up to large sheet fed presses in 4-8 colors, and we offer large web offset printing.

At our eSA digital plant, we feature the Xerox, Igen3 for larger run, digital printing. The Igen3 allows us to print up to 14.33 x 20.5 size sheets, with little restrictions on the type of paper and the weight of the paper. This press will print up to 6000 8.5 x 11 sheets per hour. The solids look great, and we can print from your uploaded files within hours of receiving your files, if necessary.

We now have BIODEGRADABLE BIOFLEX BANNERS and POSTERS WITH BIODEGRADABLE RECYCLED FOAM CORE, and can print the posters using vegetable based inks.

The banners print like a coated paper, and now replace the polyester and vinyl banners.

LIKE OLD TIMES, WE RUN A LOT OF 1 AND 2 COLORS PRINT JOBS

At my High Mountain plant, we feature business card, postcard and letterhead printing, in pantone colors, for 1-2 color offset printing.

We are pleased to announce that we printed the New York Environmental Green Maps for Green Map, Inc. on our 100% post-consumer waste recycled, 60# Cascades Enviro text. This is a great example of multi color printing and good opacity and folding on an uncoated paper.

Many of our clients are changing to more environmental papers over coated sheets. The natural look is now in vogue.

Digital Printing

Digital printing avoids film and chemicals used in the normal printing process and we use environmentally friendly inks that are 100% non toxic toner. I consider this process more environmental than when we print with soy inks on our offset presses. Soy ink is 14% soy based and 86% oil based. Our toners are 100% non toxic.

We now have in writing the environmental guarantee from the Xerox Corporation that the toners we use in the Igen3, are 100% non toxic. That means our toners are 7 times more environmental than soy inks. 14% non toxic for Soy Inks, versus 100% non toxic for our toners.

You can eat the toner and be fine. Don't try that with soy inks.

We also have this guarantee from Minolta/Konica for our smaller digital machine.

There are numerous other environmental attributes listed in their environmental statements that are pertinent to our environmental stance.

A FEW EXAMPLES OF OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PRINTING JOBS

We are known for our short run, cost conscious, environmental, digital printing, for educational training manuals, trade show printing, such as postcards and flyers, and brochures that are wire-o bound for client presentations, etc., usually printed in 8 pages up to 300 pages. We feature a full bindery on premise. You can have wire-o, perfect bound, saddle stitch, GBC, etc. Tab dividers, collating, fullfillment and mailing come with our package.

I consider our pricing inexpensive, especially if you are calling a printer, who does not own an Igen3 press.

Let me tell you about a few jobs we did that are common to my clients.

We printed 400 brochures for the UN, that were 64 pages plus cover, in 4 colors, size 8.5 x 11, that needed a delivery in 24 hours, and we did it. The price was under $8000.00. That was a steal. I delivered them myself, and listened to a diversity summit, that was terrific.

For a fashion show in NYC, run by Technion, we printed 400, 16 page brochures, size 5.5 x 8.5, printed 4 color on our enviro 80# text weight, that were needed in 24 hours.

For a Financial account, we printed 100 brochures, with 7 tab dividers, for 28 sheets, printed 1 side, and in 4 color, plus we film laminated the covers, which is not environmental, but sometimes needed, and bound with wire-o for approximately $2000.

We normally want 2-3 days for our printing, but we had no choice on these jobs. We charged some OT, but they were ecstactic to get the printing on time, and we were within their budget.

We feel most brochure jobs that have quantities between 10 and 500, are digital runs, no matter how many pages.

We print many larger runs on our 40 inch presses, but the plates and make readies don't kick in until you reach 1000 copies.

We check digital versus offset pricing on every inquiry we get. Sometimes my clients have no choice, due to timing. Digital dries instantly, and we can go to bindery immediately. The UN job and the fashion job had no time for waiting on offset inks to dry.

Gallimard Jeunesse, the childrens division of French-Canadian publisher Editions Gallimard, used 100 per cent post-consumer recycled paper for the first printing of the tome. Gallimard published the book on Environ 100, a post-consumer recycled sheet manufactured by Cascades Fine Paper Group in ST. Jerome, Quebec, north of Montreal.

TREE FREE NEW ITEM: TERRASKIN.

TerraSkin is water proof, tear resistant, looks like a dull coated sheet and prints like a coated paper. It is very strong. We printed 60M inserts that were inserted into the May/June How Magazine, and the printing was great, and the perf we did, was spectacular. It perfed so cleanly, I was totally amazed.

This sheet competes favorably with the synthetic market, and is about half the price.

Normal brochures, flyers, and covers to books, where the added strength is needed, make TerraSkin a winner, in both the synthetic market and the upscale corporate market. Besides being tear resistant, TerraSkin is waterproof, but feels and looks like a velvet coated stock. My clients love the feel of this new grade.

We recommend using TerraSkin for high end shopping bags, brochures, flyers, magazine inserts, business cards, waterproof pressure sensitive labels and any project needing strength.

TerraSkin, made from rock and minerals, is a tree-free, chlorine free, paper, which will bio degrade back into it's source, the powder of stone, if exposed to ultra violet rays and moisture for 6-9 months. It is possible that in a landfill, this used paper could change back to stone.

We realize the paper business is a big culprit in deforestation, and we think that sometimes a tree free paper is a better option.

TerraSkin has incredible printing capabilities, while using 20-30% less ink. We print only with environmentally friendly inks on this grade as well as our other lines.

TerraSkin can be used to replace tyvek type orders, as this grade is hard to rip and is waterproof, and prints like a coated sheet of paper. Upscale shopping bags, printed sharply in 4 colors, and needing that extra strength and durability make this a grade one you will want to price out, versus the grades presently being used for durable print projects.

I personally think if you need pressure sensitive labels that are waterproof, this grade is a strong possibility. You can say it is tree free, chlorine free, and although it is more money, it may last long enough to justify switching to this paper.

Literature that comes in contact with water is a good choice for TerraSkin. Flyers, brochures, business cards, etc. are some of the projects we have printed so far.

A PULP MILL USING CHLORINE DIOXIDE USES 35-40,000 GALLONS OF WATER PER TON OF PULP.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT A SINGLE SHEET OF 8.5 x 11 INCH PAPER BLEACHED WITH CHLORINE CHEMISTRY REQUIRES MORE THAN 13 OZ OF WATER.

SHEETS BLEACHED PROCESSED CHLORINE FREE, USE LESS THAN 2 OZ OF WATER.

I have pushed 100% post-consumer waste paper since 1990 to protect our over crowded landfills, and our incinerator plants. Now we need to think of our water and global warming issues as well.

Using our 100% PCW lines, does both. I have both issues covered, and we have Third Party Certificates of Authenticity, from the Chlorine Free Products Association, to back up our claims.

We have 100% post-consumer waste papers that are 100% processed chlorine free in 20# and 24#, all the text weights, and in matching cover weights from 50#-130#.

The Chlorine Free Products Association, (CFPA) has certified Cascades Enviro, Inspiration Eco Fiber, and Neenah's Environment PC 100 for being 100% Processed Chlorine Free and 100% Post-Consumer Waste Recycled. Also, they are FSC.

We use Cascades Enviro in the 28# weight, and Eco Fibre in the natural colors in 24# or 28# to print letterheads with the certified emblem as a watermark, in any size and in any position you desire. To my die-hard tree free advocates that are disappointed that many tree free lines have been discontinued, I want to inform you that the Rainforest Alliance considers 100% post-consumer waste a suitable second generation tree free paper, as there are no new trees used. Only all post-consumer waste is re-used. As we handle five major 100% post-consumer waste paper lines, please consider this viable alternatve.

If you want our fully packed sample kit, our kits sell for $25.00 delivered, and we "rebate" this price with your first order.

Our fully packed kits include our Tree Free Lines, which include Mango, Banana, Coffee, Lemon, Sugar Cane, Bamboo and our Rock papers. Rock paper is made from Limestone and Calcium Carbonate. There is no water used in making the rock papers, and they look like a dull caoted paper and print like a coated paper.

We have printed samples of our uncoated and coated recycled and tree free lines, and swatch books so you can feel and see the different weights, colors and sizes that these environmental lines come in.

You could even alter each postcard. We have done this successfully for clothing stores that feature different color suits on their personalized postcards to their clients, and car dealerships showing different color cars.

Maybe, the client bought a yellow shirt last time, and the store has a sale on a brown suit. They want to show a brown suit. The next client bought a gray shirt last time, and the store wants to show a blue suit this time.

For approximately $200, we could run all the cards tailored to the tastes of your clients. Try 10 different sets of cards.

Laser Guaranteed Inks

Besides the speed of our deliveries and the environmental benefits, one more "extremely critical" benefit of our stationary printing is that our toners are organic and "Laser Guaranteed."

We print our short run digitally and most digital printers will not guarantee that when you imprint your message on their letterheads, the toners will not run.

Our toners are set and are not affected by heat. The toners we use on our #2 machine are also 100% non toxic.

Preparing Your Files

My clients ask me what files to send, and we can work with almost anything you have, as long as you can also send us a HI RES PDF. We can see what your native files look like by comparing them to your PDF. We find PDFs also help us in accurately pricing your jobs. We support the following programs:

• Adobe Illustrator
• Adobe PhotoShop
• Microsoft Publisher
• Microsoft Word
• QuarkXpress

• I usually encourage my clients to run digital on orders up to 500 to 1000 sheets per form, on our maximum sheet size 14 x 20, and after 1000 sheets, I then start figuring your prices on our larger sheet fed presses. On 1 and 2 color work, I generally just figure our offset presses.

• We run most 4 color business card orders digitally. Even 2 colors jobs converted to CMYK and ,if necessary, color corrected in photo shop, can be printed at lower prices than on our 2 color offset presses. That assumes we can match the pantone colors chosen. Sometimes we can.

We are able to print 24 lots of business cards on our 13 x 20 sheet size. If you have 4 names to print, at 500 cards per name, that means we need to print only approximately 85 sheets through our press.

Our prices for business cards are low, when you have larger runs, and a lot of names to print. Also, if you can combine business cards with postcards, using the same paper, I can put them together for a substantial savings.

• For flyers and light weight brochures, we specialize in running them on 100% post-consumer recycled papers, coated recycled paper, denim blue jean reclaimed cotton, and blended tree free papers using Kenaf and Hemp. Many of these grades are chlorine free.

• For those clients that need matte, dull or gloss coated, we stock all weights and finishes. Our lines are recycled and many are chlorine free.

Variable Data Mailings

We also feature environmental printing for items such as wedding invitations, fund raisers, and personalized, direct mail.

We can take your data base and tailor your mailings, as finite as you need. Studies show that variable mailings can produce 5 times better results for a modest set up fee of your variable commands.

If you know 100 clients bought x product, we can personalize the text and the pictures to seeing if they are interested in purchasing your products again, while a different set of copy, pictures and names could be tailored to another group, who you know bought a different product line.

We can set this up and run as many variables as you desire. Our Igen3 press is becoming the #1 digital press on the market today. Our quality is terrific. You can't tell the difference between conventional offset printing and our digital printing. I offer both, and I can't believe the advances in our digital presses.
